# What Is Auction Sniping?

> Auction sniping is placing your bid in the last seconds or minutes of an online auction instead of early, so other bidders have little or no time to answer. It works best on hard-close auctions, such as most eBay auctions; on soft-close auctions a late bid extends the clock, so it wins by outlasting rivals rather than surprising them.

**Auction sniping** is bidding at the very end of an online auction instead of early. A sniper decides a maximum in advance, waits, and places it in the last seconds (on a hard-close auction) or the last minutes (on a soft-close one).

## Why bidders snipe

- **Early bids start bidding wars.** Every early bid tells other watchers that someone wants the item and invites them to raise.
- **Late bids leave no time to react.** On a [hard-close](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/hard-close) auction the clock ends at a fixed second, so a bid in the last 10 seconds cannot be answered.
- **It keeps your maximum private.** Your limit stays hidden until there is no time left to use the information.

## Sniping on hard-close and soft-close auctions

| Auction type | What a last-second bid does | What wins |
|:--|:--|:--|
| [Hard close](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/hard-close) | Lands with no time left for a reply | The highest maximum at the final second |
| [Soft close](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/soft-close) | Extends the clock by a few minutes | The bidder who is still there when the extensions stop |

On a soft-close auction a snipe cannot win by surprise, because the extension gives every rival a chance to answer. Bidding late still helps: it keeps the price low while rivals are present, and it wins by attrition, because people who were watching earlier often leave before the extensions stop.

## Sniping by hand and with software

You can snipe by hand: open the lot, wait for the final seconds, type your maximum. The risks are lag, distraction and time zones. ShopGoodwill and eBay run on Pacific time, so for bidders elsewhere the busiest closing hours fall at night ([see when auctions end](https://ghostnode.co/reports/when-online-auctions-end)).

Sniping software places the bid for you at a moment you choose. GhostNode does this on eBay, ShopGoodwill, HiBid and BestBid with your own connected account: you set a ceiling per lot and it never bids above it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is auction sniping allowed?

Bidding late is ordinary bidding. eBay's help page on bid sniping says it is allowed, including with software that bids for you. Soft-close marketplaces respond to late bids by extending the auction, not by banning them. Automated tools are a separate question: several marketplaces' terms restrict automated access, so read them before connecting one.

### Is sniping the same as proxy bidding?

No. A [proxy bid](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/proxy-bidding) is a hidden maximum the marketplace bids up to for you. Sniping is about WHEN you bid. Many snipers place one proxy-style maximum in the last seconds.
