# What Is the Hammer Price?

> The hammer price is the winning bid when an auction lot closes. It is not what the buyer pays: the auction's buyer's premium, sales tax, handling and shipping or pickup costs are added on top, so the real cost of a lot is often 15-40% above its hammer price.

The **hammer price** is the final, winning bid on an auction lot, the number on screen when bidding stops. The name comes from live auctions, where the auctioneer's gavel strike closes the lot.

## Hammer price versus what you pay

The hammer price is only the start of the bill. A typical online auction invoice adds:

| Line | Example | Running total |
|:--|--:|--:|
| Hammer price | $100.00 | $100.00 |
| [Buyer's premium](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/buyers-premium) at 15% | $15.00 | $115.00 |
| Sales tax at 7% on hammer and premium | $8.05 | $123.05 |
| Shipping or the cost of collecting it | $12.00 | $135.05 |

The lot "won at $100" cost $135.05: 35% more than the hammer price. The rates differ by marketplace and seller, which is why two lots with the same hammer price can cost very different amounts.

## Why it matters when you bid

- **Set your maximum from the total, not the hammer.** Decide the most you will pay all-in, then work backwards to a maximum bid. The [buyer's premium guide](https://ghostnode.co/guides/buyers-premium-explained) has the formula.
- **Compare like with like.** Past sale prices on a site with no premium and on one with an 18% premium are not comparable until both are turned into [landed cost](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/landed-cost).
- **Watch the extras in the terms.** Handling fees, card surcharges and removal deadlines are listed in each auction's terms, not in the hammer price.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the hammer price what I pay?

No. You pay the hammer price plus any [buyer's premium](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/buyers-premium), sales tax (which in many places is charged on the premium too), and handling, shipping or pickup costs. That total is the [landed cost](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/landed-cost).

### Why is it called the hammer price?

At a live auction the auctioneer strikes a gavel (the hammer) to end bidding on a lot, so the last bid accepted is the price "at the hammer". Online, the lot's close plays the same role.
