# What Is a Hard Close Auction?

> A hard close means the auction ends at its scheduled second, even if a bid arrives in the final moment; nothing extends the clock. Most eBay auctions work this way, and ShopGoodwill documents no extension either. Because rivals cannot answer a bid placed in the last seconds, a hard close is where last-second sniping works best.

In a **hard-close** auction the end time is final. The lot closes at the advertised second, and whoever has the highest bid at that moment wins, even if that bid arrived one second earlier.

## Hard close and soft close

| | Hard close | [Soft close](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/soft-close) |
|:--|:--|:--|
| A bid in the last minute | Counts; the auction still ends on time | Extends the end time |
| Can a rival answer a last-second bid? | No | Yes, during the extension |
| What last-second bidding does | Wins by surprise | Wins by outlasting rivals |
| Examples | Most eBay auctions; ShopGoodwill (no extension documented) | HiBid, K-BID, mac.bid, Proxibid, GovDeals and AllSurplus |

## Why a hard close favours late bidders

- **No reply is possible.** A bid in the final seconds leaves rivals no time to raise.
- **Early bids are a signal.** Bidding days before the end tells other watchers there is demand and invites a bidding war.
- **[Proxy bidding](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/proxy-bidding) still decides the price.** A last-second bid only wins if your maximum is the highest; it just keeps others from finding out in time to raise theirs.

## Risks of bidding at the last second

1. **Lag.** A slow connection or a page that takes a second to submit can push your bid past the end.
2. **Clock differences.** Your computer's clock and the marketplace's may differ by a few seconds. Use the countdown on the lot page, not your system clock.
3. **No second chance.** If your bid does not go through, there is no extension to try again.

An [auto-bidder](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/auto-bidding) reduces the first two risks: it runs on a server rather than your phone, reads the lot's closing time from the marketplace itself, and places the bid at the offset you chose.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do eBay auctions have a hard close?

Most do. An eBay auction normally ends at its listed time, and bids in the final seconds are not followed by any extension, which is why sniping is common on eBay. Exceptions, as of October 2026: eBay says it is testing extended bidding (a bid in the final 60 seconds resets the clock to 60 seconds) in some categories, and rolled it out for all auction listings in Australia from August 2026.

### How late should I bid on a hard-close auction?

Late enough that nobody can respond, early enough that your bid arrives: roughly 5 to 15 seconds before the end when bidding by hand, depending on your connection. Software can bid closer to the end reliably.
