# What Is a Lot in an Auction?

> A lot is the unit an auction sells: one item, or several items sold together for one price. Each lot has its own lot number, bid history and closing time. Bulk lots ("14 laptops, various models") sell as a single lot, so the winning bid buys everything in it.

A **lot** is whatever is sold under one bid. It can be a single watch, a box of mixed tools, or a pallet of returned electronics. You bid on, win and pay for the whole lot.

## Lot numbers

Each lot in an auction has a **lot number**, usually its position in the catalog. In a timed online auction, lots often close in lot-number order, a few seconds or minutes apart (see [staggered closing](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/staggered-closing)), so the lot number also tells you roughly when it ends.

## Single lots and bulk lots

- **Single-item lots** are easy to price: compare with what the same item sells for elsewhere.
- **Bulk lots** ("14 laptops, various models", "pallet of returns") put many items under one bid. Divide the price by the number of items: bulk lots often work out cheap per unit precisely because many buyers do not want, or cannot move, the whole lot.
- **"Choice" lots** at some live auctions let the winner pick one or more items from a group at the winning price per item. Read the description carefully.

## What to read before bidding on a lot

1. **The description and every photo.** A lot is sold as described, often [as is](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/as-is).
2. **Quantity.** "Lot of 3" or "x3" means three items for one winning bid; some auctions price per item instead, so check the terms.
3. **Pickup or shipping.** Many auction lots are [pickup-only](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/pickup-only).
4. **The closing time of that lot**, not just of the auction.
