# eBay Auction Sniping: Win Auctions at the Lowest Price

> To snipe on eBay, decide your maximum from what the item is worth, don't bid early, and place your full maximum, as an odd amount, in the last 5-15 seconds. It works because most eBay auctions end at a fixed second and eBay's automatic bidding only charges you one increment over the second-highest bid. Watch for eBay's extended-bidding test, which resets a 60-second clock after late bids in some categories.

**Bidding early on eBay feels safe**, and it's exactly how you end up overpaying.

Learn how eBay auctions really end and you'll win more auctions while paying less.

This guide covers **automatic bidding**, the **last-second window**, eBay's new **extended bidding** tests, and the mistakes that kill snipes.

Most eBay auctions have a **hard close**: they end at the exact scheduled second, with no extension. That single design decision is why sniping is so effective there, and why it has been a core buyer strategy for two decades. See the [eBay marketplace page](https://ghostnode.co/marketplaces/ebay) for fees, payment and when eBay auctions end.

## How eBay bidding actually works

eBay uses **automatic bidding** ([proxy bidding](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/proxy-bidding)): you enter a maximum, and eBay bids the minimum needed on your behalf, up to that maximum. The visible price is not what the leader is willing to pay; it is one [increment](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/bid-increment) above the *second-highest* maximum. Two consequences:

- Bidding early doesn't "lock in" anything; it only reveals demand and attracts attention (outbid bidders are notified, which brings them back).
- A losing snipe means the item was going to cost more than your maximum anyway. You lost nothing.

## The sniping method

1. **Value first.** Check sold-listing comparisons and set a hard maximum including shipping and any import charges.
2. **Don't bid early.** Every early action adds attention.
3. **Bid your full maximum in the last 5-15 seconds.** Not a round number: $103.57 beats the crowd of $100 maximums by an increment.
4. **Accept the losses.** Sniping optimizes price, not win rate. If you must win, place your true walk-away number and stop caring about tactics.

## Extended bidding: eBay's new exception

As of October 2026, eBay says it is testing **extended bidding** in some categories: any bid in the final 60 seconds resets the clock to 60 seconds, and the auction ends only when 60 seconds pass without a bid. eBay does not say which categories. eBay Australia rolled it out for all auction listings from August 2026. Where it applies, a last-second bid cannot win by surprise; it wins by outlasting rivals, as on any [soft-close](https://ghostnode.co/glossary/soft-close) auction.

## Common mistakes

- **Round-number maximums.** $50.00 loses to $50.01. Add odd cents.
- **Sniping the wrong format.** "Buy It Now" and "Best Offer" listings aren't auctions; negotiate instead.
- **Cutting it too fine.** Bidding at 3 seconds on hotel Wi-Fi is how snipes miss. 5-15 seconds is the practical window for people; software can go closer.
- **Winning junk fast.** A perfect snipe on a listing you never inspected is still a bad buy. Speed of discovery should buy you *time to check*, not replace it.

## The bigger edge: seeing the auction before the crowd

Huge numbers of new eBay auctions start every day. The ones that end cheap are often the ones that never collected watchers: typo titles, wrong categories, terrible photos, inconvenient end times. Finding those consistently is a coverage problem, not a patience problem.

eBay's saved searches email you new matches. [GhostNode](https://ghostnode.co/features) runs your keywords on eBay around the clock, alongside the other marketplaces you switch on, and keeps every match in one list with its price and countdown, so you can decide your maximum with hours to spare. It can also bid for you on eBay with your connected account, never above your ceiling; bidding in the final moments starts on the Hunter plan.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is sniping allowed on eBay?

Yes. eBay's help page on bid sniping says it is allowed, including with software that places bids for you; eBay also points to its own automatic bidding as an alternative.

### Why do last-second bids win on eBay?

Most eBay auctions have a hard close and eBay uses automatic (proxy) bidding. A late bid leaves rivals no time to raise their maximum, so the highest maximum standing at the end simply wins.

### What is the biggest sniping mistake?

Bidding a round number. Odd amounts like $102.53 beat everyone who stopped at $100 or $102.

### Do I need software to snipe on eBay?

No: you can snipe by hand by watching the countdown, but you risk lag, distraction and time-zone math. Software places the bid at the moment you choose and never sleeps. See [the sniper tools compared](https://ghostnode.co/compare/best-auction-sniper-software).
