What Is Auto-Bidding?
Auto-bidding is when software places bids for you on an auction site, up to a maximum you choose in advance and at the moments you choose, so you do not have to be at a screen when a lot closes. It differs from a marketplace's own proxy bidding, which raises your bid instantly whenever someone outbids you, by letting you control the timing.
Auto-bidding means software bids for you. You choose the lot, the most you are willing to pay, and when bidding should happen; the software watches the auction and places your bids, so you can be asleep, at work or in another time zone when the lot closes.
How an auto-bidder works
- You connect your marketplace account. Bids are placed in your name, with your account, exactly as if you clicked.
- You set a ceiling for each lot. The tool never bids above it.
- You choose the strategy and timing. For example: wait until the closing minutes and place one bid, or raise one increment at a time when outbid.
- It watches the lot and acts. Near the close it reads the current price, decides the next bid, and sends it.
Auto-bidding versus the marketplace's proxy bidding
| Proxy bidding (built in) | Auto-bidding (a tool) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | The marketplace | Separate software |
| When it bids | Immediately, every time you are outbid | When you choose, often at the end |
| Shows your interest early | Yes, your first bid is visible | Not until it bids |
| Works across marketplaces | One marketplace | Can cover several |
Proxy bidding answers every rival at once, which starts bidding wars early. An auto-bidder that waits for the closing window keeps your interest hidden until it matters. That is auction sniping, done by software.
What to check before trusting one
- A hard ceiling per lot, enforced by the tool, not a suggestion.
- Clear outcomes. You should be told whether a bid went in, was outbid, won or failed, and why.
- Whose account it uses. A sniper bids in your name, so it needs access to your marketplace account. Find out how that access is stored and how to revoke it.
- What happens on a soft close. A late bid extends the auction; the tool must keep answering until the extensions stop, without passing your ceiling.
Auto-bidding in GhostNode
GhostNode auto-bids on eBay, ShopGoodwill, HiBid and BestBid. You connect your own account, set a ceiling per lot and choose when bidding begins; on ShopGoodwill you can also choose between GhostNode raising one step at a time and ShopGoodwill's own proxy bid up to your maximum. Auto-bidding is on every plan, including the free Scout plan; snipe timing (bidding in the final moments) starts on Hunter. Plans set how many auto-bids run at once (3 on Scout), how many lots they may win per month (3 on Scout, unlimited on Ghost), how many marketplace accounts you can connect (1 on Scout, 3 on Hunter) and the highest ceiling one auto-bid may have ($500 on Scout) (see pricing).
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between auto-bidding and proxy bidding?
Proxy bidding is the marketplace's own feature: you give it a maximum and it answers every rival bid immediately. An auto-bidder is a separate tool that decides WHEN your bid goes in, often in the last seconds, and can work across several marketplaces.
Can an auto-bidder spend more than my maximum?
It should not, and you should check how a tool guarantees it. In GhostNode the maximum is a hard ceiling per lot: a bid that would go above it is never sent. On every plan except Ghost, plan limits also cap how many lots auto-bids may win each month and how high one ceiling may be ($500 on Scout).
Which marketplaces can GhostNode auto-bid on?
eBay, ShopGoodwill, HiBid and BestBid, using your own connected account. On AllSurplus, K-BID, Proxibid and mac.bid GhostNode finds and tracks lots and you bid on the marketplace yourself.
