What Is Proxy Bidding?

Definition

Proxy bidding means you tell the marketplace the most you are willing to pay, and it bids for you automatically, one bid increment at a time, only as much as needed to keep you ahead. Your maximum stays hidden; if you win, you usually pay one increment above the second-highest bidder's maximum, not your own.

Proxy bidding is the marketplace bidding on your behalf. You enter a maximum, the most you would pay for the lot, and the marketplace's system acts as your proxy: whenever someone outbids you, it raises your bid by the smallest step needed, until your maximum is reached. eBay calls this automatic bidding.

How it works, step by step

Say a lot is at $50, the increment is $1, and you enter a $100 maximum:

EventCurrent priceWho leads
You bid with a $100 maximum$50 (or $51 if someone had bid before you)You
Rival bids $60$61You (the system bid $61 for you)
Rival bids $85$86You
Rival bids $120$101Rival (one increment above your $100)

Two consequences:

  • You rarely pay your maximum. You pay just enough to beat the second-highest bidder.
  • Your maximum stays private, but the fact that you bid does not: everyone watching sees the price move and the bid count rise.

Ties

If two bidders enter the same maximum, the one who bid first normally wins at that amount (Proxibid and mac.bid state this rule, as do many HiBid auction houses). This is one reason some bidders place their true maximum early.

Proxy bidding versus bidding late

Proxy bidding answers every rival immediately, which can start a bidding war days before the close: your early bid tells others there is competition. Sniping holds the maximum back until the end. Many bidders combine them: decide the maximum early, place it as a proxy bid in the closing seconds, by hand or with an auto-bidder.

Where you will meet it

eBay, ShopGoodwill, HiBid and most auction-house platforms offer some form of maximum bid. Not every marketplace does: on BestBid, for example, a bid is recorded exactly as submitted, so the next legal bid is the current price plus the increment, and a high "maximum" is revealed in one jump. Check how a marketplace treats a maximum before you enter one.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay my maximum bid if I win?

Usually not. With proxy bidding you pay one bid increment above the second-highest maximum (or the starting price if nobody else bid), unless that would exceed your maximum.

What happens if two people enter the same maximum?

Usually the bid placed first wins at that amount. Proxibid and mac.bid say so in their own help and terms, and HiBid auction houses generally do in theirs; check each marketplace's terms.

Is proxy bidding the same as sniping?

No. Proxy bidding decides HOW MUCH is bid for you; sniping decides WHEN. You can do both: place a proxy maximum in the closing seconds.
