HiBid Auctions: Soft Close, Max Bids, Fees and Auto-Bidding
HiBid is a platform where thousands of independent auction houses run their own online auctions; each sets its own buyer's premium, increments, payment and pickup terms and soft-close rule. Many timed HiBid auctions extend a lot when a late bid arrives, a max bid cannot be lowered or removed once placed, and you usually register for each sale. In GhostNode's data, HiBid's busiest closing hour was 8–9 pm Eastern. GhostNode can auto-bid on HiBid lots for you.
HiBid (hibid.com) is not one auction house but a platform used by thousands of independent auctioneers, mostly in the United States and Canada: estate sales, business liquidations, consignment, vehicles, equipment and collectibles. In 2023 it reported more than $2.16 billion in sales and nearly 35 million lots sold, across 76,737 timed and 5,765 live auctions.
Because every auction house runs its own sale, the rules change from auction to auction. The terms of the specific auction always win; read them before you bid.
How HiBid auctions close
- Many timed auctions use a soft close. A bid in a lot's final window extends that lot. The auction house sets the window (typically 1 to 5 minutes) and the extension (typically 1 to 3 minutes), and some sales use no extension at all (soft close).
- Lots close one after another. Large catalogs end lot by lot, typically a minute or a few minutes apart (staggered closing), so the auction's headline time is not every lot's time.
- Max bids are permanent. HiBid bids for you up to your hidden maximum, but a max bid cannot be lowered or removed once placed; only the auctioneer can cancel a bid.
- Ties go to the earlier bid under the terms most auction houses publish.
When HiBid lots end

What a HiBid win costs
| Cost | On HiBid |
|---|---|
| Buyer's premium | Set by each auction house and listed in its terms; it varies widely between houses, and some charge more for card payments |
| Sales tax | Set by the auction house's location; often charged on the premium too |
| Payment | The auction house invoices you, usually within hours to one business day |
| Pickup or shipping | Set by the auction house; many lots are pickup-only within a removal window |
In GhostNode's data, 23.7% of HiBid lots were pickup-only. A cheap lot three states away is not cheap; check the location and the landed cost before bidding.
Registering for a sale
You usually register for each auction and wait for the auction house to approve you before your bids count. Register early: approval is not instant, and a lot can close while you wait. GhostNode can register your HiBid account for a sale in advance.
Finding HiBid lots first
- HiBid's saved searches send a daily email digest; outbid emails and browser notifications are available too.
- The problem is volume. Thousands of auction houses list every week, and a lot you want can sit in a catalog you have never heard of, closing tonight.
- GhostNode runs your keywords across HiBid around the clock and keeps every match with its location, pickup or shipping and closing time. The HiBid buyer's guide covers the workflow.
HiBid's rules on automated tools
HiBid's terms of use prohibit robots, scrapers and other automated means of accessing its sites, and its bidder terms prohibit price manipulation such as shill bidding. They do not name sniping software. A tool that bids for you acts through your account; read the terms and decide for yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Can I lower or cancel a max bid on HiBid?
No. HiBid's help says a max bid cannot be lowered or removed once placed; only the auctioneer can cancel a bid. Decide your maximum carefully before entering it.
What happens when two people place the same max bid on HiBid?
Auction houses' own terms on HiBid generally give the lot to the bid placed first. Check the auction's terms.
Why does HiBid ask me to register for each auction?
Each auction house approves its own bidders, so you register for a specific sale and wait for approval. GhostNode can register your account for a sale in advance; the auction house still decides.
Is there a sniper for HiBid?
GhostNode is the only hosted HiBid auto-bidder we found in October 2026; there is also a free open-source script you run on your own computer. See HiBid sniper tools.
