Bid Chains: Only Buy the Extras If You Win the Main Lot

Updated · 2 min read · by the GhostNode team

Short answer

Bid chains let you link several auto-bids so the later ones only bid if you win the earlier "must win" lots. If a must-win lot is lost, GhostNode switches off every unfinished lot after it, so you never end up paying for the extras without the main item. Chains work on eBay, ShopGoodwill, HiBid and BestBid.

Auction buyers often want a set: a laptop and the charger sold as a separate lot, a camera body and two lenses, a console and its controllers. Winning the extras without the main item is money wasted. Bid chains fix that: link the auto-bids, mark which lots you must win, and GhostNode bids on the rest only while the must-win lots are being won.

The rule

A lot in a chain bids only while every must-win lot before it is won. When a must-win lot is lost (or closes without a bid, or its auto-bid is removed), GhostNode switches off every unfinished lot after it. A nice-to-have lot never stops anything. Each lot still bids at its own time, up to its own ceiling.

An example

Four lots from one HiBid auction, chained as Laptop > Earbuds > Console > Mouse, with the laptop and the console as must-win:

What happensResult
Laptop lostEarbuds, Console and Mouse are switched off
Laptop wonEarbuds and Console may bid; Mouse waits for the Console
Earbuds lostNothing changes (nice to have)
Console lostMouse is switched off
Console wonMouse bids

When lots close in the wrong order

Lots in one auction often close one after another (staggered closing), and sometimes an extra closes before the lot it depends on. For each lot you choose what happens then:

  • Wait (default): the lot is skipped, because its condition is still unknown.
  • Only while leading: it bids only if your account is the high bidder on every open must-win lot before it.
  • Bid anyway.

The chain builder warns when two lots close too close together for the result to be known in time.

Where to find it

In the console: Auto Bidding → Bid chains. Pick the lots, put them in order (or "Order by closing time"), mark each as must win or nice to have, and check the plain-language preview before saving. A chain is live as soon as it is saved, and each card shows what happened to each lot and why. Bid chains work on every marketplace where GhostNode auto-bids: eBay, ShopGoodwill, HiBid and BestBid.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a later lot closes before the main lot is decided?

You choose per lot: wait (the default, safest: the later lot is skipped), bid only while you are the high bidder on the must-win lots before it, or bid anyway. GhostNode warns you when the closing order makes this matter.

Is a bid chain the same as an eBay bid group?

No. A classic bid group tries to win ONE item out of several and stops once one is won. A chain is the opposite shape: it wants the main lot AND the extras, and stops the extras only if the main lot is lost.
