eBay Auctions: How They End, What They Cost, and How to Snipe Them
Most eBay auctions have a hard close: they end at the listed second, so a bid in the final seconds cannot be answered. (As of October 2026, eBay is testing extended bidding in some categories and has rolled it out for all auctions in Australia.) eBay bids for you up to a hidden maximum (automatic bidding) and charges buyers no premium. In GhostNode's data, Sunday was the busiest day for eBay auctions to end and 6–7 pm Pacific the busiest hour. GhostNode searches eBay for your keywords and can bid for you with your own account.
eBay is the largest online auction marketplace and the one most bidding advice is written for. Its rules are simple and the same for every seller, which makes it the easiest auction site to plan around.
How eBay auctions close
- Hard close, with exceptions. An auction ends at its listed time, to the second, and a bid placed in the last moments is not followed by any extension (hard close). As of October 2026 eBay says it is testing extended bidding in some categories: a bid in the final 60 seconds resets the clock to 60 seconds. It does not say which categories. eBay Australia rolled extended bidding out for all auction listings from August 2026.
- The seller chooses the length, so end times depend on when the item was listed, and eBay auctions end at every hour of the day.
- eBay bids for you up to a maximum. You enter the most you will pay; eBay raises your bid by the smallest step needed whenever you are outbid (proxy bidding).
- Increments rise with the price, from $0.05 under $1 to $100 above $5,000 (full table).
- Paying. If you have a payment method set up, eBay can charge a won auction automatically (by default 24 hours after it ends); otherwise you have 4 calendar days to pay before the seller may cancel.
What winning costs
| Cost | On eBay |
|---|---|
| Buyer's premium | None: eBay charges its fees to sellers |
| Shipping | Set by the seller, shown on the listing |
| Sales tax | Added at checkout where it applies |
| Import charges | Shown for international purchases where eBay collects them |
Because there is no premium, eBay's landed cost is the easiest to work out: your bid plus shipping and tax.

Finding lots on eBay first
- eBay's saved searches email you when new items match a search. They are free, but they are one marketplace and one inbox.
- Watching an item adds it to your eBay watch list, which holds up to 1,000 items.
- GhostNode runs your keywords on eBay all day, together with the other marketplaces it searches, and keeps every match in one list with its price and closing time.
Sniping on eBay
eBay's own help says bid sniping, including with software that bids for you, is allowed, and reminds you that you are responsible for anything, such as your password, that you give a sniping service. Its User Agreement (in effect June 2026) separately bans robots and other automated means without eBay's permission, naming buy-for-me agents and LLM-driven bots. eBay's sniping page is the more specific statement on bidding tools, but read both. Where extended bidding applies, a last-second bid restarts a 60-second clock instead of ending the auction.
The method is covered in detail in eBay auction sniping: decide your maximum from value, never bid early, and place your full maximum in the final seconds, using an odd amount.

Frequently asked questions
Do eBay auctions get extended when someone bids at the last second?
Most do not: an eBay auction ends at its scheduled time, which is why sniping is common there. The exceptions, as of October 2026: eBay says it is testing extended bidding in some categories (any bid in the final 60 seconds resets the clock to 60 seconds), and eBay Australia rolled it out for all auction listings from August 2026.
Does eBay charge a buyer's premium?
No. eBay's fees are charged to sellers, so you pay your winning bid plus shipping and any sales tax.
Is sniping allowed on eBay?
eBay's help page on bid sniping says it is allowed, including using software that places bids for you, and recommends its own automatic bidding as an alternative.
Can GhostNode bid on eBay for me?
Yes. Connect your eBay account in GhostNode's Connections, set a ceiling for the lot and choose when bidding starts; bidding in the final moments is available from the Hunter plan. GhostNode never bids above your ceiling.
