ShopGoodwill Auctions: How They Close, What They Cost, How to Win

Updated · 4 min read · by the GhostNode team · data as of

Short answer

ShopGoodwill is Goodwill's online auction site, where more than 130 Goodwill organizations sell donated goods. Auctions end at a fixed time, with no extension documented, and the site bids for you up to a hidden maximum. Most lots end in the evening: in GhostNode's data, 79.3% closed between 6 pm and 9 pm Pacific. There is no percentage buyer's premium, but each seller sets shipping and a handling fee. GhostNode can bid on ShopGoodwill for you.

ShopGoodwill (shopgoodwill.com) is the online auction site of Goodwill, run by Goodwill Industries of Orange County, California, since 1999. More than 130 Goodwill organizations across the United States and Canada list donated goods there: electronics, cameras, jewelry, watches, art, collectibles, clothing and much more.

How ShopGoodwill auctions close

  • A fixed end time. ShopGoodwill does not document any extension for late bids, and its help pages warn that a bid in the last seconds may not be processed before the close. Treat the listed end time as final and bid a little before it.
  • Proxy bidding on every auction. You enter a maximum; ShopGoodwill bids for you up to it, and nobody sees your maximum until the auction ends (proxy bidding).
  • The increment is added to the current price, not to the leader's maximum, so a winning bid can beat yours by less than a full step.
  • Bids are generally final. A seller may allow a one-time courtesy retraction, but do not count on it.

When ShopGoodwill auctions end

Among the large marketplaces GhostNode tracks, ShopGoodwill is the most time-concentrated. Of 120,320 ShopGoodwill lots that closed between September 13, 2026 and October 10, 2026, 79.3% closed between 6 pm and 9 pm Pacific and 44.6% in the single hour 6–7 pm. Only 19.5% closed on a Saturday or Sunday.

ShopGoodwill's closing times are Pacific time: add 3 hours for the US East Coast, and 10 hours for Baghdad (11 while the US is on standard time), which puts the busy window in the middle of the night for bidders in Europe and the Middle East. More in the closing-times report.

What a ShopGoodwill win costs

CostOn ShopGoodwill
Buyer's premiumNone described in ShopGoodwill's help pages
ShippingSet by the seller: a flat rate or a carrier-calculated rate; insurance or signature can cost extra
Handling feeSet by the seller and shown before you bid; it applies even if you pick up
Sales taxCollected based on the item and where it ships; in some states shipping and handling are taxed too

Shipping and handling are often the real price of a cheap lot. Work out the landed cost before bidding. Most lots ship: in GhostNode's data 97.0% of ShopGoodwill lots were shipping lots and 3.0% pickup-only.

Account limits worth knowing

As published in October 2026:

  • Accounts younger than 30 days can be the high bidder on at most 15 active auctions at once.
  • An account with 15 or more unpaid items has bidding suspended, and repeated unpaid items can close an account.

Finding ShopGoodwill lots first

  • ShopGoodwill's Personal Shopper emails you when newly listed items match your saved search terms. Favorites and Saved Searches live in My ShopGoodwill.
  • Search descriptions too. Many donated items have vague titles; a search that reads descriptions finds them. GhostNode can include ShopGoodwill descriptions in its searches.
  • GhostNode runs your keywords on ShopGoodwill around the clock and keeps every match with its price, shipping or pickup and closing time, next to your lots from the other marketplaces you switch on. The ShopGoodwill deals guide covers the workflow.

ShopGoodwill's rules on automated tools

ShopGoodwill's terms of use (updated January 2025) prohibit robots, scrapers, scripts, browser extensions and other automated means it has not authorized, and building third-party apps that interact with the site without its written consent. They do not name sniping software. Any tool that bids for you acts through your account, so read the terms and decide for yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Does ShopGoodwill extend auctions when someone bids at the end?

ShopGoodwill does not document any extension. Its help pages warn that a bid placed in the last seconds may not be processed before the auction closes, which is how a fixed close behaves, so bid a little before the final seconds.

What time do ShopGoodwill auctions end?

Mostly in the early evening, Pacific time. In GhostNode's data 44.6% of lots closed between 6 and 7 pm Pacific, and only 19.5% on a Saturday or Sunday.

Does ShopGoodwill charge a buyer's premium?

Its help pages describe no percentage premium. You pay the winning bid, the seller's shipping (flat or calculated), the seller's handling fee, which applies even if you pick up, and sales tax where it applies.

How many auctions can I win on a new ShopGoodwill account?

Accounts younger than 30 days can be the high bidder on at most 15 active auctions, and any account with 15 or more unpaid items has bidding suspended.
